The Greek language, called Hellenic or Ellenika, dates 14th century BC which makes it the oldest of any Indo-European languages. Born and spoken primarily in Greece, Greek is a mother tongue of over 12 million people around the globe. A substantial number of words remained unchanged through these centuries, and now emerged in certain other Latin languages (German, French, English, Italian).

Greek alphabet was borrowed from the Phoenicians in the 8th century. Nowdays Greek symbols are being used in many other fields such as mathematics, naming of stars, as names of fraternities and sororities, and so forth.
